As WORLD CUP pitch warfare between countries continues, KOOL TV remains resolutely strong in its TV viewing despite such distractions, and hopes to cram some of the following into its perusal menu for the week commencing 26th June 2010:
SATURDAY: ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES (G.O.L.D.) The lovable wide boy Del Trotter, still dopey brother Rodney and accident prone Uncle Albert, as well as all the rest of our familiar characters from John Sullivan's beloved BBC 1 comedy series take to the road for a JOLLY BOYS OUTING trip to Margate. Comedy, laughter, tears and chaos are the result in this terrific feature length Christmas Special from 1989. Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eaEBJ3Udkk
SUNDAY: LEWIS (ITV 1) Always welcome return of the stylish, heavy on quality guest stars detective drama, filmed in and around picturesque Oxford, in this sequel to the much missed INSPECTOR MORSE series, starring Kevin Whately (as Lewis) and Lawrence Fox (as his partner Hathaway), that has proved to be an almost worthy successor. Generic trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdfYGvQNq7M
SUNDAY: FRASIER (COMEDY CENTRAL EXTRA). An hilarious guest performance from Michael Keaton, as Frasier's ex-wife Lilith's seemingly repentant con man cousin Blaine Sternin, is a major highlight of one of the episodes showing in a quadruple bill (showing at 7.30pm).

SUNDAY: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (CHANNEL 4 and HD). "KHAAAANN!!" William Shatner is back as Captain Kirk to face his old nemesis, the twentieth century renegade Khan Noonian Singh (the excellent Ricardo Montalban) in this exciting, emotionally charged 1982 second film in the STAR TREK movie franchise, which put the series firmly back on track with fans and the general audience. Oh, and Spock dies at the end-tragic stuff!! So good, the movie feels like a TV episode, and will surely look terrific in all its HD glory. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJTi7KJPx_E
MONDAY: LAW AND ORDER (SKY ONE). Nineteenth and sadly final series of this durable and always well made cops and lawyers drama, created by Dick Wolfe. If only the amateurish UK version on ITV 1 could be a tenth as good as this!
MONDAY: RETURN OF THE SAINT (ALIBI) Cheesy but fun adventures from the seventies starring a very youthful Ian Ogilvy (who looks a lot like his predecessor, the even more suave Roger Moore) as the new Simon Templar helping people in trouble (who were normally top glamorous actresses from the period), fighting crime in corduroy all round the world (actually filmed overseas and not on the studio backlot!!) and driving posh cars at the same time. We always loved the title sequence and music (recently sent up brilliantly in I'M ALAN PARTRIDGE). Generic 90's trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFp0C46-vds
THURSDAY: THE THICK OF IT (BBC HD). It feels a little bit too self reverential and self congratulatory at times, but there are funny moments in this Armando Ianucci written and produced political comedy series, showing tonight in a double bill, starring Peter Capaldi as the foul mouthed Spin Doctor, Malcolm Tucker. Trailer (contains strong language): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Yt6aRiJLA
THURSDAY: THE CLOSER (MORE 4). Kyra Sedgwick returns for a new season of this well written and sophisticated show as the quirky, sassy Southern Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson, using her unorthodox but compelling skills to investigate complex, tough crimes of a mostly public sensitive nature. Generic trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFMS_JZGkHw
THURSDAY: SOUTHLAND (MORE 4). Described as the next HILL STRRET BLUES, and from the quality staple of JOHN WELLS PRODUCTIONS, we hope this dark and gritty series from TNT (pictured above), about a group of Los Angeles finest officers, can live up to such worthy claims (despite its canning after only one season). One of the shows stars is the great Michael Cudlitz, who you may remember as Bear from BAND OF BROTHERS. Promo trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aBqmRfuV8A
Those still missing the undeserved demise of FLASH FORWARD will be thrilled to hear that the entire one and only season of the David Goyer/Brannon Braga created show will be released in September (the 27th) - hopefully with lots of good behind the scenes extras on how the show was was made and outlining why certain story/script choices were made.
Sad news has come through that popular TV director Pennant Roberts-whose varied work would include multiple episodes of quality cult shows like DOCTOR WHO, THE SURVIVORS, THE OMEGA FACTOR, TENKO, THE PROFESSIONALS and BLAKE'S 7 (of which he was critically involved in the series early episodes and original casting) - has sadly died of cancer. An intelligent, lively, much liked man in the industry, he will be much missed.
It looks like UK TV comedy/acting/writing talents Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are making a reunion special. Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10389065.stm
